In this episode, we explore why reflection is a critical step in the performance process. You’ll learn how to look back on your achievements, recognise challenges, and identify key growth moments from the past year. We'll share practical tips on how to prepare for your year-end conversation, linking your experiences to your personal and professional development journey.

Hi there, and welcome to In the Know at Genus. It’s great to have you with us. Over the next few episodes, we’re going to take you through some key steps in the performance conversation process — and help you feel more confident, more prepared, and more empowered along the way.

Now, this first episode is all about something we often rush past: reflection.

Before we charge ahead with goals and plans for the new year, it’s worth taking a moment to hit pause. This is your chance to look back — not just to tick off accomplishments, but to genuinely understand what shaped your year. What made you proud? What stretched you? And where have you grown — even if it didn’t always feel like growth at the time?

And no, don’t worry — this isn’t about digging up every file or rereading every email since July. It’s about tuning into the moments that mattered.

Here’s a quick exercise. Think about one moment this year that made you stop and think: “Yeah, that was good.” Maybe it was when you solved a tricky problem under pressure. Or when you mentored someone new to the team. Or perhaps you finally mastered a system you’d been avoiding — and now you’re the go-to person.

Got a moment in mind? Brilliant. That’s your starting point.

Reflection is more than a memory — it’s how we connect the dots between effort and impact. When you pause to reflect, you start to see not only what you’ve done, but how you’ve done it. You begin to build your story — one that shows your value, your resilience, and your development. And that’s the kind of story that sets the stage for better performance conversations.

Now let’s be honest. It can be tempting to skip reflection altogether. We’re busy. We’ve got deadlines, meetings, maybe even a few performance goals that are still in “in progress” territory. But trust me — investing 15 minutes in meaningful reflection will save you hours of head-scratching later when you’re asked, “So, how did your year go?”

So, here’s your challenge: take some time this week — just 15 minutes — and write down three simple things:
First, your top three wins. What made you feel like you were making a difference?
Second, one challenge that really tested you — and what you learned from it.
And third, something that genuinely energised you. What did you enjoy? What gave you momentum?

These three points alone can give you incredible insight into your working style, your strengths, and where you might want to head next.

And if you're a manager listening in, encourage your team to do this too. Creating space for reflection helps everyone bring more clarity and confidence into their year-end conversations. It’s a simple way to help your team feel seen and supported — and it sets the tone for a more open, honest performance culture.

One final thought — reflection isn’t just about big wins or perfect outcomes. Sometimes our biggest moments of growth come from the things that didn’t go to plan. So don’t be afraid to include those too. In fact, showing that you’ve learned and adapted is a huge strength, especially here at Genus, where continuous improvement is in our DNA.

So take a moment. Reflect on what’s behind you, review what you’ve learned, and refocus on what’s ahead. You have everything you need to close this year with confidence, and step into the next with purpose.

Thanks for joining us for this episode of In the Know at Genus. Next up, we’re diving into one of the most powerful tools for growth — feedback. Giving it. Receiving it. And using it to fuel success. You won’t want to miss it.

See you there.
