Welcome to In the Know at Genus, the podcast that brings you practical ideas to support your growth, both at work and in life. In this final episode of our Personal Development & Growth series, we’re looking at something that can feel exciting, confusing, and sometimes even overwhelming: your career path. The word career can mean different things to different people. For some, it’s about progression and promotion. For others, it’s about gaining confidence, finding purpose, or developing skills in a direction that feels meaningful. Whatever it looks like for you, one thing is true: your career is not a straight line. It’s a journey. And every journey starts with a step.
Lets look at an example: A few years ago, Sam was feeling stuck. They were good at their job, steady, reliable, respected but something wasn’t clicking. There was this quiet sense that something more was possible… they just didn’t know what. Then one day, during a casual chat with a colleague, Sam mentioned they’d always been curious about how other teams approach problem-solving. That comment led to a shadowing opportunity just one afternoon sitting in on another department’s planning session. It wasn’t dramatic. It didn’t come with fireworks or an immediate career move. But it sparked something. Sam started asking more questions. Volunteered to help with a cross-team project. Built new connections. And gradually, a new path began to unfold, not one they’d planned, but one that fit. That’s the power of small steps. You don’t need a five-year plan to grow your career. You just need to stay curious and be willing to move. So how do you start? First, reflect. What energises you at work? When do you feel most engaged, even if it’s just for five minutes a day? Then, look around. What strengths do others see in you that you might not have noticed? What topics or tasks do you find yourself drawn to? Finally, speak up. You don’t need a perfect plan—just a conversation. Talk to your manager or someone you trust. Ask about what opportunities might be around the corner. Share what you’re interested in, even if you’re not sure where it leads.
Sometimes, a career step starts with a sentence like: “I’d love to try something new—do you think I could get involved in…?” And remember: developing your career doesn’t always mean changing your job. It could mean deepening your expertise, leading your first project, mentoring someone, or trying something that stretches your confidence just a little. It might also mean reaching beyond your immediate team breaking down silos, sharing best practices across departments, or supporting others through networking and collaboration. When we connect across the business whether that’s locally or globally, we don’t just grow as individuals. We help others grow too. It’s development for everyone involved. Here’s something to try this week: Think back to a time when something at work made you feel proud, motivated, or inspired. What were you doing? Who was involved? What part of that moment felt natural and resonated with you? Write down a few notes. Then ask yourself how can I invite more of that into my work? What one step could I take this month to explore that interest further? It might be speaking to someone, reading something, volunteering for a task, or just asking a question. One small step is all it takes to create movement. At Genus, we believe every career path is valid whether it winds, accelerates, deepens, or evolves slowly over time. There’s no one “right way”—just your way. And it’s never too late to take the next step.
