Welcome to In the Know at Genus, where we share practical ideas to support your growth—both at work and in life. Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s getting a lot of attention lately: Artificial Intelligence, or AI. You’ve probably heard the term before, but you might be wondering—what does it actually mean for you? Let’s clear things up. AI isn’t just for tech experts or big business decisions. It’s already part of our daily lives in ways many of us don’t even realise. If Excel filled in a series of dates for you automatically, or if Word offered a better way to phrase a sentence, then guess what? You’ve used AI today. At its core, AI is about teaching computers to recognise patterns and help us work faster and smarter. It’s not some far-off future concept—it’s already built into the tools we use every day at Genus.
Let’s take a look at a few simple examples. In Excel, imagine you’ve got a table of information—like dates and tasks. If you click “Analyse Data” on the Home tab, Excel will scan your data and suggest useful insights or charts. That’s AI, quietly working in the background to save you time and help you make sense of what you’re seeing. In Word, it helps spot spelling errors, improve your writing tone, or suggest more natural ways to phrase things. In Outlook, it recommends quick replies or reminds you to respond to emails. And in Teams, AI helps generate live captions or a meeting summary—especially helpful if you’re on a noisy line or need to catch up. These tools aren’t just time-savers. They’re also learning tools. Every time you accept a suggestion or try a new feature, you’re learning something—maybe a quicker method, a clearer way to communicate, or a new function you hadn’t noticed before. That’s what makes AI both a shortcut and a teacher. And the best part? You don’t need to be “techy” to use it. Whether you’re based on a farm, in a lab, or in an office, AI is simply there to help with the small tasks—so you can focus on the big ones.
Here’s something to try this week: Open an existing spreadsheet—or create a simple one with columns like “Date,” “Task,” and “Time Taken.” Now, click anywhere in the table, then head to the “Analyse Data” button in the Home tab (you’ll see a lightning bolt icon). Excel will instantly scan your data and suggest insights, summaries, or charts—like average time spent, common tasks, or trends across days. You don’t need to know formulas or charting rules—Excel’s AI does that thinking for you. Try one of the suggestions and see if it helps you or your team spot something new. It’s a small step that could save you time and spark fresh ideas. So, what does all this mean for your development? It means you’ve got a helpful assistant just a few clicks away—one that can reduce stress, build confidence, and even teach you a few tricks along the way. We’ve also included links to short learning modules on AI in the podcast description to help you explore further, whatever your role. Thanks for tuning in to this first episode in our Personal Development & Growth series. Next time, we’ll look at self-directed learning and how to supercharge your own development. Until then, stay curious and keep learning—because every bit of knowledge gained can be a step forward in your development.
