Welcome back to In the Know at Genus! Today, we’re diving into a topic that’s on everyone’s radar—work-life balance. It’s something we all strive for, but let’s be real: it’s not always easy to find. We live in a world that’s increasingly connected, and sometimes, it feels like work never stops. But let’s think about this: work-life balance isn’t about being perfect. It’s about finding what works for you, your role, and the culture at Genus.

Here’s the reality: balancing work and life is a constant journey, especially at a global company like Genus, where we’re juggling different time zones, deadlines, and priorities across teams. Some days, you’ll feel on top of it, and other days, it’ll feel like you’re juggling flaming swords. And that’s completely okay!

So, what’s the key? It starts with boundaries. Many of us at Genus are passionate about what we do, and we want to give our best in every project. But to truly excel, we need to recognise when it’s time to switch off and recharge. It’s easy to fall into the trap of always being “on,” checking emails after hours or feeling guilty for not answering a message right away. But here’s the thing: your best work happens when you’re well-rested and mentally clear, not when you’re burnt out.

Here’s a Genus-specific example: Perhaps you’re working with a team in the US, and you’re based in Europe. There’s often that temptation to answer emails and attend meetings outside of your working hours to stay aligned. However, the true magic happens when we respect each other's boundaries. At Genus, we value flexibility, which means setting clear expectations about when you’re available and when you’re not. This helps not only protect your personal time but also ensures you’re bringing your full self to your work.

Let’s make it practical: think of your workday as a playlist. If every song is a task, there’s no space for breaks, rest, or reflection. To find balance, you need to add some “interludes” into your day. Whether that’s a quick walk, a coffee break, or even just 10 minutes of stretching, these little moments of recharge help you be more productive and focused when you return to your tasks.

So, here’s your challenge: pick one thing you can do to set boundaries this week. Maybe it’s blocking time in your calendar for yourself, or closing your laptop at a specific time each evening. Try it out and notice how much more energised and focused you feel when you return to your work.

Thanks for joining us on In the Know at Genus! Remember, balance isn’t about doing everything perfectly; it’s about doing the important things well. See you next time as we explore more ways to stay at our best, both in work and life!
