Welcome to In the Know at Genus, where we bring you insightful ideas to enhance both your work and personal life. Today, we’re diving into something that can truly shape our experience here at Genus: cultivating a positive mindset. Now, the idea of staying positive often gets misunderstood—many people think it’s all about putting on a happy face or ignoring the tough stuff. But positive psychology is much deeper than that. It’s about consciously recognising and appreciating the good around us, which can transform our resilience and well-being over time.
Let’s picture this: you’re in a meeting, and things start to get tense. Maybe there’s a disagreement over a project detail. In that moment, it’s easy to focus on the tension and let that dictate your entire view of the meeting. But by practicing a positive mindset, we can see a fuller picture and shift our focus. Instead of fixating on the challenge, we can tap into the positives—whether that’s the creative ideas being shared, the collaboration happening, or the progress being made. Research shows that a positive mindset boosts our engagement, our ability to problem-solve, and the overall success of the projects we’re working on. Plus, it strengthens our relationships with colleagues, especially when we’re faced with challenges together.
Here’s something fascinating: our brains process an overwhelming 11 million bits of information per second, yet we’re only consciously aware of about 50. It’s like trying to understand the whole of London by talking to just one person. If we focus on a single negative detail, it can make everything feel overwhelming, triggering stress and affecting our productivity. On the flip side, when we make a conscious effort to find balance, we retrain our brains to notice the positives that we might otherwise miss. And that small shift can have a huge impact on our outlook, making us more resilient, focused, and adaptable.
Here’s a simple activity to help you start shifting your mindset: tonight, take five minutes before you go to bed to write down three things from your day that you’re grateful for. They don’t have to be major moments—maybe it’s the supportive comment from a colleague, a helpful idea shared in a meeting, or even the satisfaction of completing a task. By focusing on these positive moments, you’re training your brain to automatically spot the good around you, almost like searching for “What went right today?” instead of “What went wrong?”
Over time, this small habit can help you start noticing more of the positives at Genus, whether that’s a win in a challenging project, teamwork in action, or a thoughtful gesture from your manager. This shift in perspective helps us face challenges with more clarity, energy, and determination.
Thanks for tuning in to In the Know at Genus! Give this gratitude practice a try this week and see how it impacts your mood and energy.
